WHEN: 10 Sep

WHERE: Zoom or S11 Cantina

Join us for this special webinar, organised by Dr Stine Johansen from our Human-Robot Interaction program.

Talk Title:
Boundary Crossing: Inroads of art and design knowledge in social robotics

Abstract:
Many of the newest and most complex concerns in social robotics, such as embodiment, morphology, and emotional expression, are themes that have been addressed for centuries in sculpture. In this talk, Dr. Belinda Dunstan will describe her research path from sculpture to social robotics. The talk will explore the broader theme of the difficulties and delights of cross-disciplinary research, and then delve into some applications of art theory to human-machine interaction. Dr. Dunstan will share examples from her work to highlight the evident need for multidisciplinarity in the design of social technologies.

Bio:
Dr Belinda J Dunstan is the Principal Lead for the UNSW Creative Robotics Lab, and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Built Environment at UNSW, on Gadigal country. Belinda is the author and director of the Minor in Social Robotics for the UNSW Bachelor of Design, teaching a critically engaged and materially focused approach to the design of social robots. Recently, she was the lead editor of Cultural Robotics: Social Robots and their Emergent Cultural Ecologies (Springer, 2023). Her current research interests are social robot morphology, critical futuring, technology ethics, and cultural robotics.
