Designing for People in HumanRobot Collaboration

PUBLICATION DATE: 12 December, 2024
PUBLICATION AUTHOR/S: Johansen, Stine S.; Burden, Alan; Schneiders, Eike; Walzer, Alexander N

This special issue explores the design-led and human-centred principles driving advancements in Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC), emphasising the need to balance physical safety with mental well-being, inclusivity, and creativity across diverse domains. Contributions include systematic reviews and empirical studies on cognitive ergonomics, nonverbal communication, and socio-economic dimensions of HRC, alongside innovative approaches like using sculptural insights to enhance robot expressiveness and employing Augmented Reality to integrate robotics into creative workflows. Studies also highlight the potential of social robots to support vulnerable individuals in sensitive contexts, such as law enforcement interviews, and the importance of co-design approaches for inclusivity, particularly with adults with intellectual disabilities. By bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives, this issue demonstrates how collaborative robotics can foster safer, more empathetic, and effective human-robot interactions across healthcare, education, industry, and beyond.
