Enhancing Human-Robot Collaboration: The Role of Extended Reality

In this article, Yuan Liu from the Australian Cobotics Centre explores how Extended Reality (XR) technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR), enhance Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC) in industries. XR improves safety, workspace design, data visualisation, and operator training, facilitating efficient human-robot workflows and better decision-making. The use of XR devices like Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) and mobile devices is highlighted, alongside software tools such as Unity for XR development.

Looking to the future, Liu discusses the potential of new HMDs and AR goggles to further enhance HRC, emphasising the need for user-centric design and integration of human factors to optimize XR’s effectiveness. The article underscores the importance of combining advanced XR technologies with human-centric approaches to improve collaboration in complex environments.
