Proposed guardrails for the safe and responsible use of AI
In this article, Penny Williams Research Program Co-lead (Human-Robot Workforce program), examines the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in daily life and work and the challenge of keeping regulations aligned with its development. She discusses the Australian Government’s newly proposed regulatory “guardrails” designed to support the safe and responsible deployment of AI, especially in high-risk settings like biometric identification, automated hiring, and public assistance. Penny highlights that while AI offers substantial benefits, it can also reinforce biases and be used maliciously. Thus, businesses are encouraged to stay updated on regulatory changes to ensure their AI practices align with principles for safe, ethical AI use.
